Red Hat To Deliver Linux Solutions For IBM's S/390 Mainframe Computers
Red Hat announces the addition of Red Hat Linux for S/390 to its Enterprise Line of products and services
December 17, 2001--Red Hat, Inc. (Nasdaq:RHAT), today announced the general availability of Red Hat Linux for S/390, the latest version of its operating system for the enterprise mainframe. This new version enables Red Hat to fulfill its commitment to extend the scalability of its Linux operating system to run on the smallest of handheld devices to the largest of enterprise mainframes. Previously, Red Hat had announced its delivery of open source software solutions, services and support for IBM's entire eServer product line. Red Hat Linux is optimised for IBM's S/390 Parallel Enterprise (G5 and G6) and Multiprise 3000 servers. It can also run on IBM's zSeries 900 servers. Major features include:

  • 2.4.9 Kernel
  • gcc 2.95.3
  • glibc 2.2.4
  • ext3 Journaling File System
  • Support for large files, including software RAID for combining direct access storage devices


Red Hat also offers a full set of complementary software support, and professional services like consulting, integration, training and engineering services.

Utilising the same open source code base as Red Hat Linux 7.2, enterprise companies can deploy Red Hat Linux on the S/390, enabling them to take advantage of increased performance and efficient resource sharing, increased security, and platform portability, as it supports diverse hardware architectures with a common application programming interface. The same code base also allows Red Hat to cover the full spectrum of computing platforms, from small, embedded devices up to the largest mainframe computers.
