Extending the value of virtualization to the desktop

Red Hat Solid ICE for Desktops is a comprehensive virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) solution. It allows you to replace physical desktops with virtual desktops hosted in the datacenter, delivered on-demand, and centrally managed.

Solid ICE for Desktops reduces the cost and complexity of desktop deployments. It also improves the productivity of end users by providing a user experience nearly indistinguishable from traditional desktop installations, without the headaches.

Benefits provided by Solid ICE include:

  • Cost savings:

    • Hardware - including both client and server - costs savings
    • Software licensing costs savings for both operating systems and applications
    • Power savings through high-density virtual desktops on the server

    Enhanced management

    • Elimination of desk-side visits through centrally managed and hosted virtual desktops
    • Automated management, provisioning, application delivery, and upgrades
    • Improved business continuity during planned and unplanned downtime

    User experience

    • Superior performance including high-performance audio/video and local peripherals

Virtual Desktop Server (VDS) - High-density virtualization servers

  • Runs Windows virtual desktop on a Red Hat virtualization platform
  • Also includes a resource optimization layer that allows for better desktop interactivity, management, density, and visibility into the guest

Virtual Desktop Controller (VDC) - Desktop lifecycle management

  • Centralized Management for all components of desktop deployment, including:
    • Provisioning manager, which provisions individual and pools of virtual desktops
    • User-service portal
    • Session manager/connection broker and connection protocol manager
    • Attach users to virtual desktops or pools of virtual desktops
    • Virtual desktop image and snapshot manager
    • High-availability/clustering system for servers and virtual desktops
  • Designed from the ground up for managing thousands of virtual desktop objects
    • Search-driven (structured and wildcard) user interface (UI)
    • Administrators can manage every object in the system from one place
    • Scales to thousands of desktops

SPICE - Connecting the datacenter to the desktop

  • SPICE is a remote connection protocol built for virtual environments. It is a fully integrated component of Solid ICE for Desktops.
  • SPICE is closely coupled with KVM (Kernel Virtual Machine), and allows users the same interactive experience as they would have with a physical PC on a LAN, featuring:
    • Superior graphics performance (e.g. flash)
    • Video quality (30+ frames per second)
    • Bi-directional audio (for soft-phones/IP phones)
    • Bi-directional video (for video telephony/video conferencing)
    • No specialized hardware, as the software-only client can be automatically installed via Active-X and a browser on the client machine
