What We Can Learn From History - suggestions from CTO Michael Tiemann:
When I was in high school, I officially hated American History. As a science and math geek, I couldn't imagine being interested in what a bunch of amateur politicians thought or did 200 years earlier (nor did I appreciate trying to keep straight the names and dates that could not be derived from any underlying first principles).
Now, as a member of the revolution for software freedom, I'm finding it incredibly useful (and sometimes comforting) to see how other revolutionaries thought, fought, and prevailed in bringing their visions of freedom and fairness into the world. For those seeking similar guidance (or for the historically curious), I can strongly recommend three books on the subject.
by Joseph J. Ellis
A tale of revolution and the rebirth of a nation. In six parts. Ellis examines things we have taken for granted about the birth of American democracy through six pivotal events. He fleshes out the personalities in play and how they worked with one another to forge a new future. What happened between Burr and Hamilton? What deal was struck to secure Washington as the capitol? How was the rift between the Declaration of Independence loving Republicans, and the Constitution loving Federalists resolved?

by David McCullough
This book looks at the life of John Adams; who most famous for being second President of the United States, often overshadowed by Washington and Jefferson, but is arguably America's greatest founding father. His life, his loves, his lifelong love hate relationship with Jefferson. What results is a nice long look at a truly principled man, who was not born great, but rose to the occasion when greatness was thrust upon him.

by Alexis De Tocqueville
Before there was Tom Wolfe, there was Alexis De Tocqueville. De Tocqueville visited the US, in 1831 and wrote this lucid study of the young political, legal, social and economic system developing. Readers will find a very subjective essayists viewpoint, with remarkably astute predictions as to the strengths and pitfalls of the new US. Strangely enough the things De Tocqueville liked so much about this new system are paralleled in the Open Source movement.
