Central Bank of India Migrates to Linux, Expects to Save $1 Million In Two Years
When regulations mandated that Indian banks be fully computerized by December 2004, Central Bank
of India knew they must find a solution optimized for scalability and focused on ease of support
and maintenance. After some testing, Linux was clearly the best choice, with Red Hat as the
partner. CBI has now implemented the Red Hat solution across 1,115 branches, with 1,770 additional
branches planning to deploy Linux in 2004.

Canara Bank
After a detailed evaluation phase, Canara Bank decided to modernize branch automation by re-deploying IBBS on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux platform. The bank selected Red Hat Enterprise Linux as its platform of choice to replace NetWare servers at more than 1,000 branches across the country, after a successful pilot run. The project marks the largest roll out of Red Hat Enterprise Linux in the Indian BFSI vertical so far. The package was ported from NetWare to the Red Hat Enterprise Linux platform by CCSL.

UTI Bank
With Enterprise Linux powering the call center on low cost Intel based hardware, UTI Bank has received immense freedom to dynamically scale up resources as the call volume expands. Red Hat Cluster Suite ensures the seamless transfer of services from one server to another. As a result, the possibility of an abnormal termination has been completely eliminated. Implementing Red Hat solutions translated into huge cost-savings for SESCO, and the company now enjoys the high levels of support required for its business. “The Red Hat support team has become acquainted and comfortable with our environment, so their ability to resolve issues specific to our system is excellent. And because Red Hat doesn’t charge us per call, our total cost of ownership has decreased,” said Meier. Eliminating licensing fees also helped SESCO drive costs down. “Red Hat doesn’t charge licensing fees either, so the TCO is much less than that of an enterprise version of Windows. Using Red Hat has resulted in big cost-savings for us,” said Meier.

By using Enterprise Linux, Indiabulls could extract high performance from low cost, 32-bit x86 servers, which were available at less than half the price of their 64-bit UNIX-RISC counterparts. Enterprise Linux running on the x86 architecture has empowered Indiabulls to purchase more servers and generate 10 times more performance than its earlier UNIX-RISC infrastructure.
