This is a 3-day training focusing on web tier technologies in the JBoss Enterprise Middleware System (JEMS) product stack.

Course Description

JBoss Portal focuses on web tier technologies in the JBoss Enterprise Middleware System (JEMS) product stack. We cover details on JBoss Portal, how to create and deploy portlets, integrating portlets with other web tier frameworks such as JavaServer Faces (JSF) and configuring and tuning the Tomcat web container embedded in JBoss Application Server. Familiarity with JSP and Servlet development and related specification is heavily recommended. No previous experience with Portlets or JSF is required.

Prerequisites:

The prerequisite skills for this class are basic J2EE Web Container (Servlet/JSP) programming skills and some experience with J2EE Web-based and multi-tier application deployments on the JBoss Application Server in conjunction with the Tomcat container (whether embedded with Apache or integrated with the JBoss Application server). The student should have development experience with the following technologies:

  • The Servlet 2.4/2.5 API
  • The JSP 2.0/2.1 API
  • JavaEE application development and deployment on the JBoss Application Server
  • Deployment of a Web Application on embedded (stand alone) Tomcat or on integrated Tomcat (JBossWeb)
A working knowledge of JDBC and EJB2.1 or EJB3.0 while not a prerequisite, is helpful.

Hardware Requirements

Computer with the following configuration:

  1. A minimum of 1GHz CPU with 1 GB RAM. A 2GHz CPU with 2GB RAM is recommended for IDE users.
  2. Operating Systems: Linux or Windows XP. Windows 95/98/2000 is not supported. Windows Vista could work but not supported yet
  3. 40 GB hard disk space (for product and lab installs)
  4. CD/DVD player
  5. Video card capable of 1024x768 resolution or better
  6. Optional: Your favorite IDE (Integrated Development Environment) loaded. The instructor will support a command prompt (shell) environment. If an IDE is used, student is responsible for its proper configuration for the labs.
  7. JDK 1.5
  8. JBoss Portal 2.6.4 (will be provided by the instructor if not installed before class).
  9. Additional JEMS components, if required, will be provided by the instructor.
